Hotel Near Ford Ironman Wisconsin Race


The Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel is the place to stay when participating in the 2010 Ford Ironman Wisconsin Race in Madison WI. This year’s race will be on September 12th, beginning at 7:00 a.m. The race will start with a 2.4 mile swim in Lake Monona. Click here to see the swim map. The two-loop, 112 mile bike course will then begin. Finally, the 26.2 mile run will finish out the race.

Festivities for the Ford Ironman Wisconsin Race will begin Thursday, September 9th continuing through Monday, September 13th. Thursday there will be an Ironman Expo and Athlete Check-in. Friday will continue with the Ironman Expo and check-in and also have a mandatory athlete meeting at 7:30 p.m. that night.

Saturday is Kid’s Fun Day! Kid’s Fun Day is a great way for kids to get involved with all the fun! There will be a kid’s fun run at 8:30 Saturday morning around Capital Square with a celebration to follow at about 9:30a.m. Each child will receive a medal and t-shirt for participating in the race. The rest of the morning will be filled with kid friendly activities on the rooftop of Monona Terrace. The run is open to any child under the age of 18 and the kid friendly activities are open to everyone! After enjoying Kid’s Fun Day activities head back to the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel for a relaxing swim in our pool, the largest indoor pool in Madison.

Sunday the race will ensue with all its adventures. Spectators can find where to watch their athlete by clicking here. On Monday the festivities will conclude with awards and post race massages. After such an exhilarating and exhausting race, come rest in one of our comfortable hotel rooms.

Hotel Near Madison, WI. Henry Vilas Zoo




The Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel is the place to stay when visiting the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, WI. The 28 acre zoo is open from 9:30a.m. to 5p.m. each day and has FREE admission!

This fantastic zoo was started as a free public park in 1904. The Vilas family gifted the city land and money for improvements to the park. The park was later named for the Vilas’s son, Henry, who died at a young age. Finally, in 1911 animal exhibits became part of the park. The first animals to come to the zoo were whitetail deer, followed by bears in 1913. Over time, more and more exhibits were created and the admission remained free.

Today the zoo has an enormous amount of exhibits. There are monkeys, lemurs, grizzly bears, alpacas, seals, bison, Gila monsters, anacondas, poison arrow frogs, and piranhas. In children’s zoo exhibit there are wallabies, red pandas, goats, porcupines, and meekrats. In addition to all the awesome exhibits, make sure to check out the discovery center and herpetarium.

The zoo also has some great events like a special Halloween event and the polar bear paddle.

Hotel Near Madison WI. Art Fair Off the Square




Come check out local Wisconsin art at the 31st Annual Art Fair Off the Square while staying at Madison Wisconsin’s Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel. This year’s art fair will take place this July 10th and 11th in Downtown Madison. The fair is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The fair will have over 140 different artists displaying their work. These artists will have their many different talents on display and for purchase. There will be jewelry, sculpture, painting, glass art, engraving, and many more art forms.

You can also walk with your doggie at the 2K dog walk run by Dawg Dayz Doggie Daycare.

Sample great foods! Many of the areas restaurants will be offering delicious samples of food. There will be chains like Applebees and Starbucks and also places unique to the area like Clausen’s Bakery, K-Peppers, and Bean Sprouts. Enjoy Turtle Sundaes, spicy shrimp, Irish Stew, Mini Mooseburgers, Stramboli, and many more appetizing foods.

Madison WI. Hotel Near Cave of the Mounds


Come visit the Natural National Landmark, Cave of the Mounds, and stay at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel in Madison, WI. Formed over a million years ago and open as a park since 1940, Cave of the Mounds offers a fascinating and educational experience. Visitors can see many stalagmites, stalactites, and other formations in the cave. The cave is made of limestone and goes as deep as 70 feet below the surface in places. The cave is a crisp, cool 50 degrees year round. Tickets are only $15 per adult and $7.50 per child.

In addition to the fascinating cave and cave tour, there are many activities to do above ground as well. There are trails that you can walk or bike. The Karst View Trail has great views and sinkholes to see! The Oak Valley Loop is a savanna woodland that has all kinds of beautiful habitats to view. The Rocks & Rains Gardens are another great attraction to see with its native plants.

Ebeneezer Bringham’s (the man who lived above the cave) old barn has been transformed into the Discovery Center which has fossils and cave formations to view. Go to the mining sluice and discover all the gems and fossils. Take something home from your trip when you stop by the gift shop on your way to back to the Howard Johnson Plaza.
