Madison WI. Hotel Near Cave of the Mounds

Come visit the Natural National Landmark, Cave of the Mounds, and stay at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel in Madison, WI. Formed over a million years ago and open as a park since 1940, Cave of the Mounds offers a fascinating and educational experience. Visitors can see many stalagmites, stalactites, and other formations in the cave. The cave is made of limestone and goes as deep as 70 feet below the surface in places. The cave is a crisp, cool 50 degrees year round. Tickets are only $15 per adult and $7.50 per child.

In addition to the fascinating cave and cave tour, there are many activities to do above ground as well. There are trails that you can walk or bike. The Karst View Trail has great views and sinkholes to see! The Oak Valley Loop is a savanna woodland that has all kinds of beautiful habitats to view. The Rocks & Rains Gardens are another great attraction to see with its native plants.

Bringing the kids? Check out the Discovery Center or dig for fossils. Ebeneezer Bringham’s (the man who lived above the cave) old barn has been transformed into the Discovery Center which has fossils and cave formations to view. Go to the mining sluice and discover all the gems and fossils. Take something home from your trip when you stop by the gift shop on your way to back to the Howard Johnson Plaza.

Pack your gear and head to the Cave of the Mounds and the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel for your educational and family friendly trip.
